Macaroons Are Not Macarons

According to Sally's baking addiction website, Macarons and macaroons are two completely different cookies. Macaroons have an extra O in the name and are coconut cookies. Macarons are delicate sandwich cookies. Here is Sally's coconut macaroons. See the difference? Though they are both cookies made with egg whites, they are much different.

Ingredients:

To make these French macarons you will need :

  • 1 3/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 3 large egg whites, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • Gel food coloring (optional)

French Macarons Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour together in a bowl, then set aside.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Gradually add the granulated sugar and beat on high speed until stiff peaks form. If using food coloring, add a few drops at this stage and mix until desired color is achieved.

Gently fold the dry mixture into the egg white mixture until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this will cause the macarons to be flat.

Transfer the mixture to a piping bag with a round tip and pipe small circles onto the prepared baking sheet. Tap the baking sheet gently on the counter to remove any air bubbles.

Let the macarons sit at room temperature for 15-30 minutes until a skin forms on the surface.

Bake the macarons for 15-18 minutes, or until they are set but not browned.

Let the macarons cool completely on the baking sheet before removing them.

Match up the macarons by size and fill with our homemade buttercream or any desired filling. Some popular options include buttercream, ganache, or jam.

Store the filled macarons in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
